  • Västernorrland is among the leading counties in Sweden as regards per capita production of goods and services.
  • Paper, pulp, woodproducts and chemical products are the reason why Västernorrland is among Sweden’s leading regions in export value per employee.
  • Västernorrland County is Sweden's first environmental county, which means that all the municipalities in the county are members of SEKOM – the Swedish Association of Eco-municipalities.

  • The World Heritage site The High Coast has the world record in land elevation since the latest Ice Age. In 9,600 years the land has risen 286 metres out of the sea.
  • The most concentrated area of rock carvings in Sweden lies in Näsåker near Sollefteå. So far, 2,000 rock carvings have been discovered, the oldest of which are up to 6,000 years old. Västernorrland invests most on culture per inhabitant in the country.
  • In 2004, Kramfors Municipality was declared the most child friendly municipality in Sweden. 92 per cent of families with children in the county are content or very content with life in the county.
  • Norrdans in Västernorrland is one of Sweden’s few professional dance ensembles, and the only one in the north of Sweden.
  • Västernorrland has two ice-hockey teams in the top division, Timrå and Modo. Our top-flight football teams are the men’s team GIF Sundsvall and the woman’s team Själevads IF. Our top-division representative in the basketball league is Sundsvall Dragons.
  • Västernorrland has 13,000 hunters who fell 9,500 moose per year.
  • The county is one of the most horse-trotting intensive counties, with racetracks at Bergsåker, Solänget and Dannero. Västernorrland has some of the most successful horse trainers in Sweden.
  • 650,000 salmon and salmon trout smolts annually are put out in the county’s rivers.
  • Västernorrland County had Sweden’s biggest increase in business start-ups in the year 2004.
  • The county produces 80 per cent of the world’s production of fermented herring.
  • The High Coast Bridge has a navigable height of 40 metres. The two pylons that bear up the bridge reach a height of 180 metres above the sea and when completed in 1997 represented the highest building in Sweden.
